Papers of Moncure D. Conway [manuscript], 1859-1906.

In an 1859 letter to Samuel Longfellow, Conway discusses establishing "The Dial," a project inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson. In other letters he discusses his sermons as heretical, Sunday superstitions; the completion of "The Life of Thomas Paine," the authenticating of paintings in connection with his book on Paine, his reluctance to republish earlier books as his views have changed, a republication of Thomas Arnold's "Manual of English literature," and a connection to the Eustace family of Virginia. He also sends a letter of recommendation to Salmon P. Chase, is unable to review Orlando Smith's book, comments favorably on a sermon by Abel Stevens and offers suggestions for obtaining older editions of his work and a photograph of himself with [John Henry?] Newman.
